Overview
More than 175 rare illustrations, selected from Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, and other periodicals of the Civil War period capture the opening shots fired upon Fort Sumter in 1861, the battle of Gettysburg, the fall of Vicksburg, Sherman's destruction of Atlanta, and the Confederate surrender at Appomattox in 1865, among other significant scenes.Synopsis
Presents an array of thoroughly annotated b&w wood engraving illustrations that appeared in the two main illustrated weekly newspapers (Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper) during the Civil War. Both began with fairly fanciful depictions and, as the artist-correspondents became more professional and accustomed to the war environment, came to depict the events with increasing accuracy. Includes short introductory essays for each chronological segment of the war. Annotation ©2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
