This guide to Civil War battlefields, monuments, museums, and other sites is arranged by the regions in which the war was fought, then by states, and then by major battlefields and nearby places of interest, including restaurants and accommodations housed in historic buildings. The location of each site, its historical significance, hours of operation, and accessibility to the handicapped are listed, while a description of the battle and more information are given for major battlefields. The book has amateurish maps, but is enhanced by Civil War photographs and sources to answer further questions. Lawliss's book provides more information on each site, especially on battlefields, but is less comprehensive than Alice Hamilton Cromie's A Tour Guide to the Civil War (Rutledge Hill Pr., 1990. 3d rev. ed.), which covers Civil War sites and memorials found in all 50 states. Still, it will be a welcome addition not only for Civil War buffs, but also for travelers interested in Civil War history.-- Kathleen Farago, Lakewood P.L., OhioSchool Library Journal

Part II is a travelog of battlefields, monuments, and other sites arranged by state. Motels, restaurants, parks, museums and visitors ' centers are often listed with telephone numbers. The unique part of the book--Part III--contains a listing of Civil War publications, videos, libraries, and collections. Lawless even includes information on how to trace Civil War ancestors. Excerpts on where to find and how to join battle reenactments, and how to collect period antiques and memorabilia complete this fascinating volume.-- Carol Clark, R.E.
