The ideological differences between the two super powers of the twentieth century created a conflict that was unique to the times and changed the face of the world. The struggle between the Soviet Union and the United States engulfed the entire world and caused the death of millions of individuals, despite the fact that open conflict between the two rivals never erupted. What occurred instead was a series of disputes between countries that shared the ideological beliefs of either the United States or the Soviet Union. Both super-powers assisted these countries, providing arms, financial support, and troops when open warfare erupted. There was also a horrifying escalation in the development of nuclear weapons during this time, and the differences between the two powerful countries created a tense situation that engulfed the entire world. Despite these tensions, the Cold War ended peacefully and with an air of openness between the two countries. Sheehan has presented the Cold War in a concise manner that provides a suitable introduction to the times. The text is straightforward and easy to read and includes small facts throughout that profile people, places and events of the Cold War. Fully illustrated with photos from throughout the twentieth century, the text also includes a glossary, an index, additional sources to consult, and a time line. Part of the "Questioning History" series. 2003, Smart Apple Media, Ages 10 to 15.β Danielle Williams
