Overview

In this work, one of the library world's leading thinkers discusses the transformative effect communications technology has had on information delivery from past to present to future. By tracing the transformations, Gorman writes a road map for achieving balance between the tradition of library service and ever-changing technology.

Synopsis

The treatment of current communications technologies as tools of librarians must be understood in terms of the history of communications technologies, argues Gorman (dean of library services, California State U. at Fresno). Just as the television was overly hyped as the solution to educational needs, information technology, while contributing some usefulness, will necessarily fail to deliver on the promise of the completely "virtual" library. Gorman urges librarians to recognize this pattern of communications technologies in order to integrate the use of new technologies towards meeting library goals.
