Overview

This is our fourth title in our highly-praised Our Wild World: Ecosystems series. Once again, author/ photographer Wayne Lynch takes readers on a personal journey through a treasured North American ecosystem. Amazing photography, first-person anecdotes, and tons of factual information on the animals, plants, climate and landscape come together to give a complete picture of the ecosystem in action. Subjects cover the wide diversity of living things in this habitat from strangler fig trees and bromeliad plants to armadillos and dozens of water birds. And of course gators! These gorgeous books are a feast for both the eyes and mind.

Children's Literature

What is it like to take a walking tour of the Everglades? To come face-to-face with an alligator? To narrowly escape a 200-pound python? To watch a panther disappear into the marsh? With photographs and visual details, Wayne Lynch takes young readers on an exciting and delightful journey through the Everglades. Lynch includes personal anecdotes about close encounters with natural phenomenon, adding a special touch to this narrative about Florida’s famous freshwater marshes. Reading this book is like traveling in the footsteps of a lifelong naturalist whose knowledge flows through each page and photograph. With his well-crafted exposition, Lynch takes readers through the grassy waters, deep sloughs, and gator holes. The magnificent full-color photographs, along with the author’s passion for the subject matter, allow young readers to enjoy this wonderful and colorful adventure through the wilderness of Florida. This book will appeal to naturalists of all ages and is a wonderful addition to any library. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

Gr 5-7 A chatty, informative text is nicely larded with Lynch's personal experiences, which lend a real immediacy to the author's exploration of America's largest wetland and its many ecological niches. "ECO-Fact" boxes pop up like grasshoppers in a meadow, proffering data on a wide variety of topics, from local rainfall amounts to marsh rabbits to native orchids. Handsome color photos appear on every page, and a small map is included for geographic orientation. This attractive portrayal of a unique biome is sadly marred by some mislabeled photos. One identifies a Snowy Egret as a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron; another labeled as a Black-crowned Night-Heron is actually a Yellow-crowned. Yet another makes it sound as though a water strider has only four legs (they have four really long ones, but two shorter ones make up the insect quota of six). Daniel Blaustein's The Everglades and the Gulf Coast (Benchmark, 2000) covers much of the same ground (with more of an emphasis on human effects), but lacks the engaging personal touch of this very readable, eye-catching work.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
