Description: This book is the second volume of a series that specifically addresses different aspects of animals involved in biomedical research, including background material regarding the basic biology, behavior, anesthesia euthanasia, and species variations of the different classes of animals currently used in research.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide investigators with the essential aspects of animal care, husbandry, and special considerations required for various species of animals currently used in research settings. The increasing use of new animal species as animal models, particularly with respect to transgenic animals, requires knowledge of the special considerations in caring for these animals as offered in this book.
Audience: The book is primarily targeted for laboratory animal specialists and investigators using laboratory animals for in vivo studies.
Features: This book is well constructed, is not too lengthy, and offers current references on material that cannot be thoroughly addressed in the confines of the book. A major asset is the systematic approach in discussing animals, with regard to biology, physiology, handling, and special considerations in husbandry for each species.
Assessment: The increased diversity of species, including nonmammals, used in research points to the need for a book dealing with the care plus management and unique species characteristics of laboratory animals. The advent of transgenic animals alone is justification for such a book, because the special considerations in caring for these animals will require knowledgeable animal specialists.
