From The Critics
Reviewer: Lise Anne Guay-Bhatia, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)Description: This updated second edition is a well-written, comprehensive source of information on the fetal and infant eye. The first edition was published in 1988.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide pediatricians, ophthalmologists, and neonatologists a comprehensive text to use as a reference and aid in infant eye care. It includes specific updates and expansion in the areas of retinopathy of prematurity, congenital malformations, the testing of infants' vision, and research in molecular genetics and the development of the eye and vision. These objectives are worthy, necessary, and academically fulfilled.
Audience: According to the author, the book is written for pediatricians, ophthalmologists, and neonatologists. In addition, I believe it is extremely valuable for residents training in both pediatrics and ophthalmology. The author is a nationally known pediatric ophthalmologist, and the book includes contributions from 57 physicians and other medical personnel who each wrote chapters in their specific areas of expertise.
Features: The book contains a combination of mostly black-and-white photos and graphs and a few color photos. It is well illustrated, and the illustrations correlate well with the text. Most chapters conclude with a complete set of extensive references. The table of contents is adequate for the book, and the overall appearance of the book is very good.
Assessment: This is an excellent, well-written, well-referenced source of current information regarding the newborn eye. It is of value to ophthalmologists, pediatric ophthalmologists, pediatricians, and neonatologists. Since its original publication in 1988 it has undergone extensive updating, especially in the fields of retinopathy of prematurity, testing of infant vision, and molecular genetics. The second edition offers enough information to justify replacement of the previous edition. This book has a valuable place on the shelf of anyone interested in the fetal and infant eye and in the development of newborn baby vision.
