Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as President of the United States at a pivotal time in American history, changing the modern presidency forever. This resource by Pederson (political science, Louisiana State Univ., Shreveport; FDR and the Modern Presidency) contains 300 biographical A-to-Z entries, each approximately 500 words long, of individuals in the administration, world leaders, and well-known figures of the time. The entries, which range from U.S. Secretary of War Henry Stimson to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to American novelist Sinclair Lewis, show each individual's relationship to Roosevelt, the Great Depression, and World War II. (Interestingly, not all of Roosevelt's children are profiled.) A chronology of Roosevelt's life follows the biographies. Completing the work are a listing of government officials from the Supreme Court, Congress, and administrative agencies; the text of 30 of Roosevelt's speeches; an extensive bibliography; and an index. Bottom Line This comprehensive work would be most helpful for finding quick reference information about the Roosevelt administration or those who served in it. It belongs in academic and public libraries where there is high interest in FDR.
