Synopsis
From the Inside Flap As Kathleen grew up in Northern Ireland, IRA terrorist bombings seemed almost commonplace. She had no desire to visit or meet anybody from the south, a land and a people she had been taught to hate. But shortly after joining the Church, she finds herself at a youth conference among the very people she prayed she would never encounter. She is forced to face "the enemy" and the deep fears she has carried since childhood. But each time she believes her old feelings are behind her, bomb blasts strike closer to home than she could have imagined. As she fights for her very freedom, she is forced to choose between family loyalty and telling a true story that no one will believe. Éamonn had a bright future ahead of him. A gifted poet raised in peaceful Dublin, people were grooming him for broadcasting and literary fame before he had finished high school--even though he was a "Mormon." He could never have guessed how a three-day youth conference would change his life. He is forced to choose between life-long goals and one-time opportunities he fears will affect his salvation. Just when he thinks his hopes are within reach, his world falls apart, a nation calls for his dismissal, and a family member sits in a Dublin prison accused of terrorism. This is excellent, moving fiction about heart-wrenching struggles with loyalty, forgiveness and charity. It is a tale of maturing love between Latter-day Saints in the face of adversity, set in a backdrop of prejudice, suspicion and secret combinations. The Fifth Generation is storytelling at its best! Product Description Kathleen McNauthton of Northern Ireland and Éamonn Kelly of Dublin might as well be on opposite ends of the earth. Living on the same island, but raised amid terror and brutal conflict, they have been taught to fear one another. Brought together in a youth conference, they are compelled to see how much they have in common, and their lives are changed forever. But not everyone is happy with this situation. In fact, someone is angered to the point of using politics of terrorism to interfere. A betrayal pushes their faith and endurance to the limit as a distrusting nation looks on. Review An Exciting, Suspenseful Story with a good messageThis was an excellent book. It has characters you can relate too, and a very suspenseful climax. It's a good story of overcoming prejudices and enduring trials and hard times. It's about a young girl named Kathleen from northern Ireland, who attends a church youth conference in southern Ireland. Kathleen is scared and distrustful of the people there, but she slowly overcomes those feelings as she gets to know a young man named Eamonn Kelly. The book continues as Kathleen's relationship with Eamonn develops, despite her father's anger. The story goes on with Kathleen suffering through some terrible hardships because of her father, and her struggles to remain strong and forgive him. It's a good story about love, forgiveness and staying strong through trials. It definitely kept me riveted until the end.
