Synopsis
The Rookie Read-About Geography series teaches young readers the basic facts about geography. Colorful maps and photos illustrate simple text that includes information about terrain, climate, and people. Readers come away with a feeling that they have visited the area and know something about what it looks like and what it's like to live there. This title discusses the four oceans, the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic. Readers will learn that the Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean and the Arctic Ocean is the smallest. Readers will also be introduced to plants and animals that live in the ocean and learn that people use the ocean for travel and play.Editorials

I always thought there were more than four oceans, but according to this "Rookie Read-About Geography" there are only the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic Oceans. The Pacific is the largest which, unfortunately, does not really come across clearly in the map used to show the continents and oceans. Kids will learn a little about the plants and animals that live in these oceans ranging from the tiniest plankton to the very large blue whale. Each spread is illustrated with a photograph that supports the text. The book ends with an open-ended question and a picture glossary entitled "Words You Know." There is also an index and a brief blurb about the author. 2005, Children's Press/Scholastic, Ages 5 to 7.βMarilyn Courtot
