Overview

Mary Fales woke suddenly at 2:00 in the morning. A strange glow was lighting up the sky. The evening before, Mary heard that a fire had started in another part of Chicago. She went to bed, thinking she would be safe. Now the wind was spreading the flames. For more than 24 hours the fire raged, destroying thousands of homes and businesses-and even leaping across the Chicago River. Everyone had to flee. Although 100,000 people were left homeless, the citizens of Chicago did not lose hope. They would return to take part in the amazing rebirth of their city. Chicago would rise again!

Children's Literature - Peg Glisson

In early October 1871, fire swept through the city of Chicago for more than a day, leaving behind a largely destroyed city and many homeless people. Using a narrative text and many primary documents, this entry in the "Code Red" series describes how events unfolded in Chicago, including why firefighting efforts were so challenging, what help was provided from other cities around the country, and how phenomenally rapid the city's rebuilding was. Profiles of four people having a role in the fire follow the text, as do a glossary, an index, and a list of recommended, age-appropriate books and websites. McHugh reports on the lack of certainty about the cause of the fire and is careful to absolve Mrs. O'Leary's cow. The generous use of drawings, prints and quotes from survivors on each double-page spread brings this dramatic historical event to life. The layout is inviting and will help make this appealing to both older and younger students. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
