Overview
The "Cornerstones of Freedom" detail important events in United States history. Children are given the sense of being witnesses to history-in-the-making and contemporaries of famous people who helped shape the United States into the world power it is today. Starting with the Spring 1992 titles, a brand-new format has been introduced using more photographs (many in full-color), historical engravings, and an easy-to-read typeface. Many popular previously published titles will be updated in this new format. Each book includes an index.Describes the 1929 stock market crash and the events and effects of the depression that followed, including the New Deal programs intended to restore the economy.
Editorials
School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-A strong, if basic, introduction to the Depression, Franklin Roosevelt, and the New Deal. First published in 1985, the text of this revised edition differs only in minute detail from the old (e.g., Dupont is now Du Pont), although the inclusion of a brief index is welcome. The overhaul that has been done is fundamentally cosmetic. The pencil drawings have been replaced with black-and-white photographs and full-color reproductions. Justified columns have been eliminated, and the layout is less rigid. These changes are appealing, if not dramatic. Overall, The Great Depression is a well-written selection, and the photos serve to underscore the smooth narration. The book should prove especially useful to collections that need to replace the earlier edition, or to those needing materials for readers not yet able to handle Bruce S. Glassman's Turning Points in American History: The Crash of '29 & the New Deal (Silver Burdett, 1989.)-Anita Palladino, Finkelstein Memorial Library, Spring Valley, NYBook Details
