Children's Literature - Susan Hepler

Cleverly designed and triangle-shaped, this book explaining the building of the Egyptian king Khufu's pyramid works on several levels. The five double-paged spreads feature unique paper engineering-the usual pop-ups, a challenging 9-piece puzzle, lift-up flaps explaining the key players, interesting foldout which help us visualize layers of a mummy or show timelines, and even wearable jewelry in a pocket. The main text narrates while captions and marginal text extend details-how pyramid sites were leveled using water, what a sarcophagus or a canoptic jar looked like, how rock was cut using water and wood wedges, and so forth. With gentle handling, this book would invite even the most jaded middle elementary school student to become involved in Egyptian studies.
