One of a series titled "Indigenous Peoples of the World," this book looks at the "unique history, customs and rituals, daily routines, and contemporary concerns of the Gypsies as well as the effects of Western civilization on their lives." The Gypsies (or Roma as they prefer to be called) originated in India and migrated to Europe perhaps as early as A.D. 1100. This book relates their history, their beliefs, behaviors and traditions (The Romaniya) and the ongoing struggle to adapt to modern life while maintaining their culture and identity. It also addresses the centuries of mistreatment and persecution suffered by these people; more than one and one-half million were killed in the Holocaust, called the Great Devouring by the Roma. This well-documented work, illustrated with photographs and reproductions of drawings and paintings, gives the reader a glimpse into the lives of this fascinating people. At the end of the book is a list of works consulted and suggestions for further reading. There is, however, one point that requires an explanation. The author defines indigenous people as those "people who are descended from the original settlers of a given region." The Roma immigrated to a Europe populated by many ancient tribes and therefore, can be neither original settlers nor an indigenous people. 2003, Lucent Books,β Anita Barnes Lowen

Gr 7 Up-One of the most misunderstood, maligned, and persecuted ethnic groups is the Roma or Rom, commonly known as Gypsies. A nomadic people whose ancestry is traced to India, they now live in many parts of the world and have met with almost universal suspicion. Sharp presents a comprehensive overview of the beliefs and activities of the Roma worldwide. The book discusses historical origins, family life, cultural conflicts with authorities, occupations, and social customs. The final chapter is especially interesting as it reports on the conditions of the Roma in the 21st century. Sidebars with facts enhance this thoroughly researched book that is illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs. A good choice for reports as well as for general readers.-Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.Book Details
