Synopsis

The 400-year-old Scottish legend of Sawney Beane continues. After the execution of the infamous Beane cannibals, many tales and ballads about the heinous clan spread throughout the British Isles. When a story called The Hairy Tree begins to circulate in the town of Girvan and beyond, Dora, a herbalist who had known the rumored Beane survivor, decides to write her own account. On the day of the Beane clan's execution in Leith, Dora helped her friend Kate MacCreadie, the sheriff s wife, exchange her damaged infant for the beautiful, healthy baby of a raven-haired Beane daughter. No one, not even Kate's husband, Ewen, suspected the switch. After three years of being spoiled and pampered by both Kate and Dora, this Beane child named Elspeth started to assert herself, and Kate began to feel misgivings about her deceitful act. Kate became convinced that Elspeth had the Beane bad blood; and feared that she had been cursed. To her, Elspeth was contaminated. Rebelling as she matured, Elspeth gave Kate reason for her negative attitude towards her by acting accordingly. Accusations against the teenage Elspeth point to her licentious behavior and even implicate her in a young man's death. It is 1606, a time of serious witch-hunts in Scotland, and Elspeth, is at the mercy of the town as she is tried as a witch.
