School Library Journal

Gr 6-9 Gravity, pressure, lift, friction, electromagnetism, sound, and surface forces in liquids are presented clearly, showing their effects on everyday life. Mathematical relationships are described, but White does not present equations or formulas as such. Experiments and demonstrations using common household objects are included throughout, with appropriate safety precautions. He explains, for instance, how straws and flush toilets work. The black-and-white illustrations consist of drawings and diagrams that clarify the text and photographs, many of which demonstrate the principle or theory under discussion. White's style shows that he respects the intelligence of young people and appeals to their curiosity. Physics books of this caliber are not written very often; in light of that and the fact that mechanics is often neglected in books for teens, this book is a ``must buy'' for school and public libraries. Margaret M. Hagel, Norfolk Public Library System, Va.
