Reviewer:James M Schipper, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This is the sixth edition of a book describing cardiac pathophysiology, including disease states as well as diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The previous edition was published in 1997.
Purpose:This book aims to describe cardiac function, pathology, and treatment in simple, everyday language. Nonthreatening, it is meant to be a starting point for gaining cardiovascular knowledge.
Audience:The author notes that this began as a handbook for cardiac patients, but through the years has been upgraded to a medical textbook. It is intended to be used by medical personnel including students, nurses, paramedics, midlevels, house officers, and family practitioners. It seems this book is more likely to appeal to those at the beginning of their exposure to cardiovascular disease, but that they may quickly outgrow it.
Features:A broad range of cardiac topics is covered, including basic physiology as well as common cardiac diseases and their treatment. A large number of illustrations generally complement and clarify the text well. Occasionally, however, both the text and illustrations are overly simplistic. Review questions at the end could help students solidify their learning.
Assessment:This book fills a niche as a basic primer for the study of cardiovascular disease. It helps to make difficult topics easier to understand, but at the price of oversimplification. Given the rapid advances in cardiovascular medicine over the past 10 years, this update is necessary.
