From The Critics

Reviewer: Nathan B. Smith, MD(University of Alabama)
Description: Written by an International Medical Graduate (IMG), this book is designed to help IMGs obtain and survive a residency training program in the U.S.
Purpose: The author draws on his success as a U.S. trained IMG, as well as interviews with other successful IMGs, to present a detailed account of the essential steps in the process of completing a residency in the U.S.
Audience: The intended audience includes IMGs, both in the U.S. as well as those outside, who are seeking residency training in the U.S. Residency training program directors in the U.S. who recruit a significant number of IMGs will find this book useful as the author provides insight to the challenges in store for IMGs who wish to succeed in training in the U.S.
Features: Though informal and anecdotal in style, it is well organized. The table of contents is a good outline of the process from initial self-evaluation of goals and motivation for seeking training in the U.S. through planning and taking the necessary examinations, completing a residency training program, and making plans for practice beyond training. A number of useful tables are featured as well as phone numbers, addresses, and web sites where IMGs can access useful information and documents for obtaining visas and registering for required examinations.
Assessment: The author draws on common sense and the collected wisdom of an undetermined number of other IMGs to dispense advice. The specific guidance for preparing for the two critical written examinations, the USMLE Parts 1 and 2, particularly the suggested areas of focus for IMGs, may not generalize to all IMGs as commonly as suggested by the author. Despite these limitations, IMGs seeking residency training in the U.S. will find a treasure of information and resources in this book.
