Library Journal

To select from thousands of war pic tures 135 images for this book (and an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington), editor Fralin and curator Livingston set tough criteria. They sought memorable images, while elimi nating pictures of recognizable person alities, intentionally heroic or romantic portrayals of war, sentimental and cli ched images, and the ``most gory or emotionally assaultive.'' Thus, some ``masters'' of war photography are omitted, and unfamiliar photographers included. The photographs are chrono logically arranged and well-repro duced. Captions provide dimensions and process, collection where found, brief notes about the military conflict pictured, and often a text found with the photograph. Included are an excel lent bibliography and brief biographies the photographers. For larger collec tions. Kathleen Collins, Library of Congress
