Overview

Eugene Fitch Ware, also known as "Ironquill" (1841-1911) was an American poet, politician, and Civil War veteran. He was one of the most illustrious citizens of Kansas. At the age of 19, he volunteered as a private in the Union army. Following the Civil War, he took up newspaper work. In 1867, he worked in The Monitor. Although his identity was never a secret, he used the pseudonym "Ironquill" and he regularly contributed his prose and poetry to Kansas newspapers and magazines. His works include The Indian War of 1864 (1911).
