Library Journal

This impressive dictionary provides both definitions and essay-like discussions of the significance of thinkers, movements, and projects in the international development arena and of basic and analytical concepts. Economic, environmental, cultural, and social justice issues are described in a balanced way. Current themes like sustainability, debt, and toxic dumping also find a deserved place. Although so much of development has occurred in the Third World, many of the writers included in this dictionary are from the First World; there are, however, some thinkers and activists from developing countries represented. Inevitably, questions arise about the selection of entries: Why Mother Teresa (a figure of charity, not development), but not a discussion of food security? Why so little mention of such key constraints to development as militarization and apartheid? However, the book does capture some of the excitement and creativity of the development experience, a real plus in a heavy reference book. The alphabetic list of entries with cross-references, list of abbreviations, and a substantial bibliography add to the ease of use. Teachers of international development, students, and an interested public will find the book useful for some years to come. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries.-- Bill Rau, Takoma Park, Md.
