About the Author, Brian J. Thomas

Brian J. Thomas manages technology development at SPIE—The International Society for Optical Engineering. His first contact with the online world was as cofounder and technical editor of the first multimedia magazine distributed on the Internet. Thomas' professional roots are in traditional publishing, including past positions as a technical writer, designer, and editor. From here he has pursued an ongoing interest in digital information technologies and has developed a wide variety of electronic products, including CD-ROMs, multimedia publications, online tutorials, distributed databases, and web servers. Thomas has published and presented papers and tutorials for the ACM, IEEE, SPIE, and IOP, and is currently an editorial board member and regular columnist for IEEE Internet Computing magazine. Thomas graduated form Western Washington University with a degree in English Literature and German.
