Do you want to know when the Internet was invented? What the difference is between the Internet and the World Wide Web? How a search engine works? These and ten other questions about the Internet are answered in the pages of this book. Author Nicholas Brasch takes on blogs, e-mail, web site addresses, Internet filters, spam, and more. He focuses two pages of text on each element, exploring an intriguing aspect such as how it was invented or how it functions. However, this book suffers from some lapses. For example, the passage about "What Do .Com, .Net, .Org, .Gov, .Mil, and .Edu mean?" defines only five of those six extensions; .Net is never explained. Furthermore, the questions are ordered strangely. A question about the invention of the Internet is followed by one about the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web and another about web browsers, then one about search engines. Wouldn't the questions about web addresses, about Internet filters, and about blogs, more naturally fit among this group than after discussion of e-mail and instant messaging? Shouldn't the question about VoIP be better before the book turns its attention to such forward-thinking topics as Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 and Internet technologies of the future? Like the other books in "The Technology Behind" series, this one features a colorful format and abundance of information. Illustrations are full-color photographs or drawings, and these appear on every page. Vocabulary words are printed in bold throughout the text, with definitions provided in "Word Watch" blocks on each page. "Web Watch" blocks accompanying many of the pages provide one or two web addresses of resources with additional information. It seems particularly strange that several of the questions in this book about the Internet have no accompanying URLs. Also, it's a shame this resource provides no list of books for additional information. All in all, this book is suited for answering specific, focused questions.
