Overview

Growing up in California, Yoshi knew her family looked different from their neighbors. Still, she felt like an American. But everything changed when America went to war against Japan. Along with all the other Japanese-Americans on the West Coast, Yoshi's family were rounded up and imprisoned in a crowded. badly built camp in the desert because theylooked like the enemy. Yoshiko Uchida grew up to be an award-winning author. This memoir of her childhood gives a personal account of a shameful episode in American history.

Children's author, Yoshiko Uchida, describes growing up in Berkeley, California, as a Nisei, second generation Japanese American, and her family's internment in a Nevada concentration camp during World War II.

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

The author of such accomplished children's works as The Bracelet and The Jar of Dreams offers a firsthand account of life in a Japanese American internment camp during WWII. Ages 11-up. (Sept.)

Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman

This is the autobiography of Uchida, author of over 30 book mostly for children. She writes that it was difficult for her to recall her years in the prison camps for Japanese because of the pain and disbelief that this could have happened in America. Yet, the story must be told so that it does not happen again. She does not dwell on the degradation but rather shows how the family coped with that period of their lives. What comes across is a strong sense of family values and the importance of living one's life with dignity and courage. Ms. Uchida died in June, 1992.
