Synopsis

The Hasidic teacher known as the "Sefat Emet," literally "the language of truth," was one of the last great masters of Polish Hasidism. Known to be a mystic but not a kabbalist, the Sefat Emet left behind a rich legacy of insight and theology upon his death in 1905.

The Sefat Emet achieved wide popularity both within and without Hasidic circles. In a community openly hostile toward non-Orthodox Jewry, the Sefat Emet embraced the nontraditionalists.

Professor Arthur Green, one of the leading scholars on Hasidism and modern Jewish theology, has brought together a wide selection of the Sefat Emet's teachings, along with Green's own commentary, and in so doing has achieved a remarkable work of Jewish scholarship. The Language of Truth brings the teachings of the Sefat Emet to a wide audience of both traditional and nontraditional Jews.
