Overview
Written up in countless articles, crowding the aisles of computer retailers, and hailed as the hottest growing hardware market by IDC, low-cost cams are everywhere. They retail for $50-$200, connect easily to PCs and Macintoshes, and offer a dizzying array of uses, from video conferencing to electronic photo albums to imaginative web cam Internet sites. The Little Web Cam Book can help new or prospective cam owners unlock the huge potential of these tiny cameras that attach to their computers. In clear, informal prose, it explains not only the technical side of cams, covering the million-selling Connectix QuickCam, CU-SeeMe software and more, but it's also a great source of fun project ideas, and valuable tips for improved communications.

A few years ago a college student set up an early web cam in her bedroom and invited folks to take a look on her web site, Jenni Cam. At one point the site attracted more hits than Netscape. Although Jenni was only sending out a new image every 20 minutes and the chances of seeing anything slightly risqu was remote, it was obvious then that real life was going to be real big on the net. Parker's book is a great introduction to choosing a web cam, setting it up, and broadcasting live--but still slightly slowly--your own camcast of whatever you like. It also covers videoconferencing, screen-saver design, Quicktime movie editing, and interviews with other webcasters--no, Jenni's not there! Good for beginners and people who think they know what they are doing. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.Booknews
