McGrath also celebrates the 100th day of school in The M&M's Count to One Hundred Book. A rhyming text asks readers to line the candies up in rows of 10, two rows for each of the five colors, then count them one by one, or "skip count" by 10s, fives and twos. The finale shows them arranged as a smiley face. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.Children's Literature
This clever children's book is a fun explanation of counting up to 100 M&Ms by ones, twos, fives, and tens. Because it makes the somewhat tedious subject matter fun (and tasty), it is perfect for classroom instruction on classification, counting, and skip counting. The colorful illustrations of the candies make the book fun to look at and help to explain the counting procedures as well. The M&Ms pictured in the book are life-size, making it easier for less-advanced students to count by placing actual M&Ms directly on top of the pictured M&Ms until they get a feel for the process. Although the verse seems somewhat forced and lacks the cadence typically expected from rhyming children's literature, it properly keeps young readers focused on the process of counting. 2003, Charlesbridge Publishing, Ages 4 to 8.β Stacey King
