School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-These slim, heavily illustrated titles differ in quality. While McCarthy Hearings surveys what most feel was one of the great blights on American history, the author makes a number of blanket statements that are not substantiated. Two brief examples: "Such carelessly wrecked lives act as a permanent warning against crazed investigations" or "The anti-communist war [of McCarthy] cost the lives of more than 58,000 Americans [in the Vietnam War] and over one million Vietnamese." Cuban Missile offers an apt discussion of the events leading up to that crisis and of its historical context. A concise, well-written account with good photos, it should find a useful place in most collections.-Karen Sutherland, Bartlett Public Library, IL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
