Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer:Michael J. Epstein, MD(Baylor College of Medicine)
Description:This is the third edition of this book that serves as a guide for physicians in a healthcare organization who choose to become leaders while continuing to retain clinical activity. The focus of this edition is on the professional functions of the physician leader in the healthcare organization, including credentialing, quality improvement, conflict resolution, communication, and organizational skills.
Purpose:The purpose is to define the necessity for physician leaders and then to describe in depth the role clinicians play in the medical organization, what skills are necessary, and how these skills are deployed.
Audience:The intended readers are practitioners on the staff of a healthcare organization from the entry-level to the more experienced physician who is willing and able to devote the necessary time to serve as a leader.
Features:Starting with a table of contents that logically takes the reader on a path from the purpose of physician leadership to the roles and techniques that are embraced, this publication features concise paragraphs written in a clear style. Diagrams and boxes with bullet points to illustrate key concepts are most effective. Appendixes at the end of this book add to an understanding of terms and offer tools for implementation of techniques.
Assessment:This is an extremely useful guide for the physician leader. The concepts of medical staff leadership and the necessity for physician leaders are well articulated. The chapters dedicated to quality improvement, credentialing, bylaws development, and effectivecommunication are particularly enlightening. This book is a needed compendium for the clinician who would be a medical staff leader.
