Overview
The Mississippi is the most famous river in the United States. From its source in the heart of the North American continent, the Mississippi River flows through a rich mosaic of people, places, and cultures. Millions of people live along the banks of the Mississippi. Great cities have grown up alongside the river -- from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul to St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans. Today, the Mississippi is as likely to make the headlines because of floods along its banks or pollution in its water as it is for its cities and industries.Introduces the geography, history, people, and environmental issues of Mississippi.

This installment from the "Great Rivers of the World" series offers an in-depth look at the Mississippi River. An introduction provides basic facts about the river, its history, and its influence on the United States. Chapter One, "The Course of the Mississippi," explains the formation of the river and follows it from the north to the south. "The Mississippi in History" describes how the river affected the lives of Native Americans, European Explorers, and the people of the United States. "Cities and Settlements" describes small towns and major cities along the Mississippi, as well as the influence the river had on author Mark Twain. "Economic Activity" explains the major industries of the area, as well as pollution problems. Other chapters describe the various plants and animals native to the Mississippi and the numerous environmental issues affecting the region. "Leisure and Recreation," describes festivals, museums, and activities native to the Mississippi. The final chapter discusses the future of the area. A glossary, timeline, and list of further sources complete this text. Both maps and numerous pictures of the land, animals, and people of the Mississippi are provided. This eight-chapter book would be a good supplemental text to any United States history class. 2003, World Almanac Library,β Amie Rose Rotruck

Gr 4-7-Each river's flow, history, ecological concerns, tourism, flora and fauna, etc., are explained. Texts are placed on ample white space and words in bold print are defined in glossaries. Clear and colorful photos appear on every page. Green-tinted sidebars offer fast facts, quick lists, and clarifications of the texts. Purple ones offer quotes about the rivers from famous and some not-so-well-known people. Important cities along the rivers' routes are explored. These titles have more visual appeal than the "Rivers of the World" series (Lucent). Solid choices for class units, reports, and browsers.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.Book Details
