Gr 9 Up Anyone who has visited Mount Rushmore should find especially interesting St. George's background trivia about the origin of the idea for the monument, the method of carving (blasting vise, chipping by hand), anecdotes about crusty sculptor Gutzon Borglum and the politics of financing the project during the Great Depression. St. George's account is less detailed than other books, such as Gilbert Fite's Mount Rushmore (University of Oklahoma Pr, 1964); but her text is handsomely and abundantly illustrated with period photographs. Because most of the literature about Mount Rushmore is out of print or squirreled away in fairly obscure publications, The Mount Rushmore Story is a fine acquisition for basic general information and details. George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield
