Overview

Inspired by the nursery rhyme "This Is the House That Jack Built", this delightful poem tells the story of Jack the bunny and the snowmouse he builds on a winter afternoon.

Jack the bunny builds a wonderful snowmouse, decorating it with his own ragged hat and scarf, which he is able to leave on the snowmouse when his mother surprises him with a new hat and scarf.

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger

Rhyme and repetition will make this spin-off from The House That Jack Built a favorite of the wee ones. Jack is a bunny who builds a mouse snowman using his own tattered scarf and hat for adornment. He retrieves them when called home by his mother. Next day, his mother has a surprise for Jack and the snowman. Storybook illustrations add charm.

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2--In this variation of "The House That Jack Built," Jack, a little rabbit, builds a snowmouse. The poem cumulates as he adds various features to his creation--a nose, whiskers, a hat, etc. At first the lines flow well, but toward the end the rhyming becomes choppy and no longer follows the traditional pattern. The illustrations are typical Szekeres: adorable bunnies and sweet mice. Unfortunately, there are several places where the text and illustrations do not match. At one point Mama is said to call Jack "with a scold," but her grinning expression shows no reprimand. If there is a need for endearing animals cavorting in the snow, select instead Mick Inkpen's Kipper's Snowy Day (Harcourt, 1996) or Jonathan London's Froggy Gets Dressed (Viking, 1992).--Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
