Overview

David Kirk presents a conceptual view of what is probably the largest and best-known proprietary operating system in use today--IBM's MVS software family. He writes for people who understand (and probably use) computers but do not know what operating systems do, why they exist, or how the component parts are structured. This book addresses the issues within the context of MVS and is for managers, programmers, and end users who work with MVS applications. People who do not work with MVS will find the book valuable for its conceptual presentation, since most operating systems in use today (including those for PCs) have some resemblance to what appears here. Although the title of this book references MVS, there is also information on the many other components that typically constitute an MVS installation. While the information on these other components is not very detailed, the inclusion was necessary to present a useful picture of the MVS family. IMS, TSO, DB2, and CICS are what most people face in their day-to-day contact with MVS. Understanding how these products relate to MVS is an important building block to grasping the complexity of the MVS world. Programmers and computer operators are seldom among the professionals to directly interact with the operating system and with the hardware itself. For that reason, and also for the possible curiosity of others, Kirk includes some of the conceptual aspects of the hardware and how it makes it possible for there to be an MVS at all. Kirk presents complete descriptions of what operating systems do, why they exist, and how they are structured within the context of MVS. He covers job management, task management, data management, environmental control, history of operating systems, history of MVS, online access and database, TSO, IMS and DL/I, CICS, DB2 and SQL, MVS variations, distributed data, IMS, DB2, and CICS integration, role of assembler language, access methods, learning MVS, skill requirements, and presents a sk
