Overview
This volume begins with an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the visual pathways and then focuses on the principles of localizing pathology when symptoms of visual disorders appear. Since visual symptoms often accompany neurological problems such as multiple sclerosis, (optic neuritis=(double vision), migraine and epilepsy (visual auras), brain tumors and vascular disease, the patient may be referred either to/or from the neurologist or ophthalmologist. The basic neurological examination includes evaluation of the cranial nerves responsible for visual function and disturbance. This volume includes appendices that describe "How to Perform Visual Function Tests.""...beginning with an overview of the anatomy & physiology of the visual pathways, goes on to focus on the principles of localizing pathology when disorders appear, & an appendices on how to perform visual function tests."
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Daniel B. Hier, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)Description: This is a top-rate beautifully illustrated single author text on the neurology of vision.
Purpose: The author has set out to carefully and completely detail the functioning and disorders of the vision system from the cornea and lens back to the integrative visual cortex.
Audience: This book will be of interest to neurologists and ophthalmologists who want a detailed and scholarly description of vision and its disorders.
Features: This is a clearly written, carefully organized, and beautifully illustrated book. Clearly, for the author it has been a craftsman-like labor of love β and his care and attention to detail shows throughout this lovely book. He has divided the visual system into three main sections: optical component, the retino-cortical component, and the cortical-integrative component. Each part of the vision system is carefully analyzed and detailed with extensive discussions of both diagnostic testing and evaluation of normal functioning and disease states. In addition the book includes 59 color plates with retinal photographs.
Assessment: This is a superb book and an educational tour de force by the author who provides us with a valuable and beautiful book on the neurology of vision. The emphasis is on vision (not the entire visual system), so that it is not a textbook of neuro-ophthalmology nor does it address disorders of ocular motility. The illustrations are exceptional and are worth the price by themselves. This is a highly valuable account of vision from retina back to integrative visual cortex.
