Reprint of the 1987 revised edition of a work originally published in 1964. Stead (English, U. of Auckland, NZ) wrote the book as a response to the nearly universal lionization of Eliot and acceptance of Eliot's critical views on the history of English poetry. Stead finds Eliot's poetry to be primarily image-driven, rather than the more conscious expression of a critical philosophy that Eliot himself professed it to be. Stead also establishes the centrality of Yeats to modern poetry, rescuing him as well as other poets from the more marginal place allotted them in Eliot's view. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
