Gr 9-12-- With world politics changing so rapidly, it's difficult to find a book that isn't dated by the time it reaches the press. However, this work pulls together selections on post-cold war problems that will continue to be debated for some time to come. The topics include: the new military role of the U. S.; cooperation vs. protectionism in the world economy; the role of NATO and the United Nations; the emergence of ethnic and economic conflicts; problems in developing countries. Each issue is worthy of an entire tome, but here the editors have presented short articles and position papers from journals, newspapers, and books that express opposing views so that readers are encouraged to apply critical thinking skills. Geoffrey Kemp, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and Jeanne Kirkpatrick are among the outstanding contibutors. Entries are followed by thought-provoking questions and a bibliography. A valuable appendix lists organizations that are directly concerned with the issues, their addresses, publications, and a statement regarding their point of view. Although this title may be heavy reading for average high school students, those who are interested in these topics, as well as their teachers or other adults, and debators of all ages will find this sampler of serious and scholarly articles well worth their time. --Miriam Hansen, Indianhead Federated Library System, Eau Claire, WIBook Details
