Children's Literature

The Nez Perce are the subject of this recent addition to the list of "First Reports" books about Native Americans. It is one of the more simplified books on the topic available for the youngest of curious readers. It covers the usual gamut of food, housing, family life, and religion prior to the influence of whites. The history as presented is sketchy with some gaps; for example, the book completely avoids the significant impact of missionaries in the 1830s and 1840s. Appropriate attention is paid to the most obvious and dramatic event in recorded Nez Perce history: in 1877 a group of more than 700 Nez Perce led by Chief Joseph nearly succeeded in fleeing to Canada. The text is amply illustrated with both period and modern photographs and paintings; also provided are a short glossary, a timeline, and book and Internet resources. Material is scarce on what Nez Perce life is like today in the 21st century. Like other recent books before it, this one gives a standard litanyβ€”they live on and off the reservations, they work jobs like everyone else, and they try to preserve their cultural heritage. 2002, Compass Point Books,

Gr 2-4-These books are nearly identical in format and type of content. In a simple but clear and highly informative narrative, each one describes the history and culture of a Native American people, from long ago until today. Both are lavishly illustrated with captioned, full-color photographs and reproductions on every page. Topics include religion, society, homes, artwork, and contemporary lifestyles. Each book uses boldface type to highlight the words included in the brief glossary, but the texts amply clarify the word in question. A few interesting but little-known tidbits are listed under the heading "Did You Know?" Unfortunately, the Web sites suggested are not appropriate for the intended readership. Nevertheless, the books do offer solid, useful information in an engaging and readable manner and are worthy of consideration by libraries seeking additional materials on Native American peoples.-Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
