Children's Literature - Sarah Maury Swan

Part of the "We Both Read, Interactive Chapter Book" series, this book is designed for a beginning reader to read part and have part read to her. It tells briefly the story of Oprah Winfrey from her days living on her grandparents' Mississippi farm, through her schooling, to where she is today. Her grandparents were poor, but her grandmother wanted Oprah to succeed and overcome racism. She felt it was very important her granddaughter do well in school and taught her to read at an early age. When she was six, Oprah went to live with her mother, but that did not work out well and, at age nine Oprah moved to her father's house. He and his new wife gave her a good life. She began to flourish, further encouraged by a white woman, Tish Fort Hooker. She learned that she could make money from public speaking. But other kids in her school made her feel bad about herself and she ended up stealing. Her mother got custody of her again and her life turned sour. But after getting into much trouble, she realized she could change her life and become a good person. Now she likes to give back to society and help people overcome their difficulties. I found this an informative book, encouraging children to strive to do well and stand up for themselves. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan
