Gr 2-4 --This Canadian import begins with a discussion of music and its elements, and then scrutinizes the instruments of the orchestra by categories: the strings, the brass, the woodwinds. A great deal of information is offered in a straightforward, well-organized manner. Most terms are clearly presented, though ``vibrate'' is used without real explanation. The bland tone of the prose makes the book mostly a collection of definitions related to the field. Daniel's colorful and somewhat whimsical illustrations, however, give it life. People of all kinds and ages are shown playing instruments; the message is that music is for everyone who wants to be involved, and their relaxed poses and dress communicate that it is fun. --Renee Steinberg, Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJBook Details
