Overview

The PACE System: An Expert Consulting System for Nursing provides a case study of the research, design, implementation, and commercial distribution of this decision support system. Beginning with a summary of PACE's twenty year development and its start as a university-based system, the author contrasts the original system with its current version to give a concrete understanding of its evolution. Further chapters discuss issues in the initial development of the knowledge base; the specific activities and efforts needed to acquire, maintain, and manage the knowledge base; how the network is maintained. The implementation, distribution, and subsequent validation of the entire clinical system is reviewed. Principles and lessons from the development of PACE are analyzed with the hope that today's researchers and developers will glean useful information from these earlier efforts.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorials

Reviewer: Mary A. Curran, RN, PhD(University of North Carolina-Charlotte)
Description: This book is part of a monograph series that intends to provide successful examples and experiences of computer applications in health care settings.
Purpose: This first edition book fulfills the stated purpose. The author uses a case study derived from his personal experience to acquaint the reader with the phases of this 20-year project. He discusses the planning, initiation, and ongoing management of large scale system development.
Audience: The Pace System discussed in the book is an expert consulting system for nursing; however, all healthcare providers and individuals involved with the development and utilization of healthcare systems can benefit from this text.
Features: Presentations of various situations, approaches, solutions, rationales, and assessments, make this book a worthwhile and timely resource. However, expanded discussion of sample screens and the inclusion of more graphics, e.g., diagrams, check lists, algorithms, would enhance the content.
Assessment: If the book is skimmed, an initial impression might be that the content is superficial or just common sense. However, upon reading the book in depth, one gains a much richer understanding and insight into system development. The historical, narrative perspective provides relevant, useful insights applicable in current and future projects. Even though the content requires careful thought and study, the return for effort is substantial.
