Like another Clio dictionary in political science published recently, Jeffrey M. Elliot and Robert Reginald's The Arms Control, Disarmament, and Military Security Dictionary ( LJ 9/1/89), this is a concise and comprehensive resource on a very important topic. Although the subject matter of these two dictionaries overlaps--Ali's book defines nuclear war terminology, and the Elliot/Reginald book focuses on a broader terminology of war and peace--very few of their entries are duplicated. Ali's book has 300 entries, twice as many as the Elliot/Reginald dictionary. Together, the books elucidate the often arcane vocabulary of nuclear weaponry and politics, and should be acquired by libraries as companion volumes. The entries on concepts, events, and weapons are cross-referenced and indexed, and each entry includes a definition as well as a discussion of historical context and current significance. Both dictionaries will help citizens make informed decisions on related political issues.-- Jennifer Scarlott, World Policy Inst., New YorkBooknews
