Library Journal

In this continuation of the Lacys' series set in the Old West (Faithful Heart, LJ 4/1/96) Deputy Marshall Jack Bower runs across the McDermott family stranded on the outskirts of Fort Bridger, WY, and escorts the trio into the safety provided by the town. Matt and Emily McDermott had traveled west hoping for a better life for themselves and their daughter, Holly. Unfortunately, their dreams soon shatter when Holly dies and Emily loses her grip on reality. Becoming convinced that the daughter of the town's general store is actually her dead child, Emily kidnaps the little girl. Unfortunately, this possibly intriguing situation is undermined by choppy writing and an overly didactic religious message that seriously hinders the plot. Not recommended.
