Purpose:The purpose is to make pharmacists and students more effective and efficient patient counselors. The book can be used by new and more experienced pharmacists and should help anyone desiring to be better at patient communication. The author certainly met her objectives and has done a very good job of doing so.
Audience:It is written for practicing pharmacists and for students who are trying to become better at patient counseling.
Features:The book discusses the importance of patient counseling and aptly covers all the details of patient communications. Various chapters deal with special situations, patient expectations, and adherence teaching. The appendixes are excellent and provide many case scenarios and useful sample forms that might be used in various counseling situations.
Assessment:This is a great book for all practicing pharmacists. This new edition compares very well to a standard in this area, Communication Skills in Pharmacy Practice: A Practical Guide for Students and Practitioners, 5th edition, Beardsley et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2007).
