Editorials

Edward W. Bermes

This book describes all the major aspects of a physician office laboratory. This book is intended to serve as a reference guide for dealing with a wide variety of issues facing people responsible for direction, supervision, consultation, management, or test analysis within the office laboratory. The audience is primarily office laboratory personnel, and secondarily the internist. But because of the breadth of the information, office managers and consultants will find the book useful. The text is logically divided in four sections: clinical practice; regulatory and economic foundations; analytical practice; and direction, management, and supervision of the laboratory. This should be a valuable reference for the office laboratory. Since the first edition in 1986 many major changes, in addition to technology, have taken place. These changes include areas such as safety (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), reimbursement, and general regulations concerning testing (Clinical Laboratories Improvement Act 1988). The authors attempt to cover the waterfront and, by and large, are successful.
