Beginning with an account of defacto "freedom of the press," this book goes on to explain early acts of censorship or control of the Colonial press by the Crown and by religious leaders. Establishing this as the historical context, the book then goes on to explain the processes and tools of the early printers' trade. Highlighted with woodcuts of colonial scenes and samples of early printing, this is a brief but informative introduction to a colonial trade that was at the very heart of our revolutionary freedom. This is a fine book, originally published in the 1960s and recently reissued. Part of the "Colonial Craftsmen" series.
