Synopsis

Product Description
The term "two solitudes" is traditionally used to describe the cultural, economic and social gulf between English and French Quebecers. In this book, however, Robert Sauve argues for the existence of two other solitudes, both of whom speak French. On the one hand are the masses, on the other the elite (the Church, nationalist leaders, provincial politicians and some journalists). The author uses historical and current statistical evidence to prove these points.
About the Author
Robert Sauve formal education includes Jesuit schooling in Montreal, an engineering degree from McGill University and Masters of Arts degree in History from the University of Ottawa. He has been active in the Quebec Liberal Party, 1977-81 and as a Montreal school commissioner, 1976-80. Vociferous critic of Quebec's Charter of the French Language, Bill 101. His opinions appeared regularly in Montreal's English and French media, 1976-81 and occasionally in Ottawa since 1990.
The first Sauve in New France was married in the French colony in 1693. Some of his progeny married local Indian maidens, most married Europeans. The first of Mr. Sauve's mother's ancestors, the Irish speaking Stantons and O'Reillys, arrived in Quebec in the 1850s. When two Stanton sisters married into the Sauve family in the 1920s, the anglophone wing of the Sauves was born. According to some prominent Quebecois nationalists, the anglophone fruit of such unions are to be condemned for having abandoned their sacred francophone identities. Moreover, these leading lights insist that English-speakers should not participate in Quebec elections, either as candidates or as voters. Quebec's Distinct Society!
