In another vein entirely, escapism 1940s-style is the allure of Trixie Belden #1: The Secret of the Mansion and Trixie Belden

Children's Literature

While traveling by trailer in upstate New York to find a runaway, Trixie Belden and Honey Wheeler investigate a case of the mysterious trailer. The girls go with Honey's governess, Miss Trask, to find Jim. His stepfather beat him and made him work on the farm for nothing. He was hiding in the old mansion that just burned to the ground. Now Mr. Frayne has died and Jim, who is his great nephew, is his whole heir. The girls want to tell Jim the news. On the way, they park next to a trailer and get attached to the family. The trailer turns out to be stolen. This adventure weaves in and out of their trip. The girls also stumble upon a farm where the woman befriends the girls. The trailer people were here, too, as well as Jim. The mystery goes on with the police tracking down the trailer and the occupants giving their hard luck confessions. The farmer and wife take the trailer family in. Jim turns up on the farm to work and is reunited with the girls. Honey's family adopts him. The cover and the series name may be a problem for today's readers. The story may be too dated, also. It is an interesting adventure but that may not be enough. However, some upper elementary and middle school youth may enjoy this read. Number two in the "TrixieBelden" series. 2003 (orig. 1950), Random House, Ages 8 to 10.
