Overview

Turnbull brings together in these two volumes many of the most significant writings on the culture and conceits of the samurai over the last fifty years. The 'tradition' naturally falls into two halves divided historically by the Tokugawa ascendancy (1603-1868): 'The Age of War' and 'The Age of Peace'. Turnbull contributes a full introduction and reviews the major themes treated by the contributors.
