Mrs. Sanchez and her class decide to paint a mural in honor of their school's fiftieth anniversary.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4--The students in Mrs. Sanchez's class brainstorm, plan, and create a mural to celebrate their school's 50th anniversary. Parents and other community members become involved in the project and various generations come together to work on it. The children's efforts are recognized by the local newspaper, praising them for their school pride. It is not made clear where this school might be, or what grade these youngsters are in, but maybe none of that matters. The text is appropriate for newly independent readers, alternating between declarative sentences and dialogue. The chapters average two-to-three pages in length and have lots of white space and full- and half-page collage illustrations. The events are depicted in flat images done in appealing prints, colors, and shapes. A welcome addition to spark students' creativity and support units on community studies.--Joan Zaleski, Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY
