Overview
Hell is a real place. Hell is a suburb. A billboard towers over, reading: have you been seriously injured? For the residents of Hell at the end of the 1960s, the metaphoric nature of their existence goes virtually unnoticed. But it doesn't slip past Paige Bergman, an unpredictable, turbulent adolescent hurtling toward adulthood, weathering an overbearing and jealous mother and a zombified father, a Buddhist motorcycle-riding lothario, coddled and clueless friends, and, above all, the shivering effects of alienation. As the demons of boredom and dislocation begin to hook in their nails, Paige's wish for salvation is granted when she stumbles upon an ethereal woman at the wheel of a blue Buick Skylark. Spellbound by the beguiling—and pained—Mrs. Gallagher, Paige sees her fantasies turn into fact, her observation into obsession. What happens after the two meet is as strange, disfiguring, and ultimately emancipating as the explosive flowering of one true love.Editorials
Publishers Weekly -
Paige Bergman, the first person narrator of Summer's richly textured but uneven debut novel, is an unhappy teenager who lives in Hell, a town in New York within commuting distance of New York City, in the late '60s. Paige hates her mother, finds high school, with the exception of her French class, irrelevant, despises her two friends and her boyfriend and obtains her one glimmer of hope from the presence of a mysterious, beautiful woman in a white Buick Skylark. (Cars play a major role in the novel, as lovingly described as Summer's human characters.) Paige's babysitting career leads her to the owner of the Skylark, which has metamorphosed into a red Barracuda: to say more would be to reveal all. It will be easy for many to identify with Paige's passion for unhappy homemaker Fiona Gallagher, and the sweetness of first love is evoked with a skill that crosses gender lines. In this story of girl-woman attraction, the woman is in no way a predator: Fiona emerges as a loving but troubled person who provides the dissatisfied girl with the only sunshine in her life. Paige herself is less satisfying: her vituperative hatred for a mother who seems no worse than average is disconcerting, and her general irritation with everything she sees is not endearing. In the first half of the narrative carelessness in grammar, tense, chronology and transitions get in the way of the story, giving the book the feel of a promising first draft. The writing becomes smoother in the second half, which is, unfortunately, marred by the conclusion, an awkward reminiscence by Paige's French teacher. Throughout, however, the novel is redeemed by sensuous language, spot-on period detail and tongue-in-cheek humor. (May) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|Library Journal
In her first novel, the author captures perfectly the confusion and turmoil of teenage self-discovery. Paige Bergman, a teenager trapped in a small town called Hell, finds herself captivated by the mother of her babysitting charge. As she gradually becomes more attached to this surrogate family (and less attached to her own), she leads the reader down the explosive path of awakening teenage sexuality and the confusion brought on by discovering that your identity is different from that of others around you. In a gentle, almost dreamlike way, Summer explores the inner workings of Paige's mind and the pain she feels as she matures and finds herself emotionally connected to someone seemingly out of reach. Paige also experiences the typical disconnectedness from parents and family so often felt by teenagers, but the story is, ultimately, one of hope and optimism. Though an adult novel, The Silk Road would be a reassuring read to any teenager, especially one who is gay or lesbian, going through this stage of life.
